An evening of Odissi by Shomrita Mandal
Shomrita Mandal discovered her passion for dance and music early, beginning Bharatanatyam training at age four under Maithili Desai in Baroda, a journey that spanned 12 years. A B.Tech graduate with over five years of IT experience, she transitioned to a full-time dance career in 2015, studying Odissi under Guru Smt. Barnalee Sarkar at Shubham. Guided by her guru, Shomrita embraced the nuances of Odissi, completing her Visharad from Pracheen Kala Kendra and debuting as a soloist in December 2022. She also holds basic training in Kathak and teaches Odissi and Bharatanatyam.
Shomrita has performed extensively across India, including:
-
- ICCR Cultural Programs, Bangalore
- Atharvotsav 2024, earning the title Nritya Nipuna
- World’s Longest Dance Performance Award, Madurai
- International Odissi Utsav 2023
- Jagannath Rath Yatra, Tamil Nadu

About the Recital Shomrita’s performance of Odissi Margam showcases traditional repertoire pieces:

- Pallavi: A lyrical, technical piece in Raag Arabi, highlighting the intricate swaras.
- Kede Chhanda Janilo Sahi: A Krishna Leela Abhinaya piece by Guru Kelu Babu, learned from Guru Ratikant Mohapatra.
- Moksh: The finale, symbolizing the dancer's union with the divine.
Her recital offers a journey through the origins and spiritual depth of Odissi, celebrating its timeless artistry.
