About Deepak Marathe

The musical atmosphere at home naturally nurtured Deepak's inborn talent to develop into a good listener first. The aesthetic sense that drives an artist to seek new ideas and goals made Deepak strive hard to learn music with keen interest. He took his first lessons at home from his mother. Then he started Vocal Training with Shri.Mahesh Kulkarni of Belgaum, through which he gained the knowledge of the compositions and development of Indian classical music.

He was attracted to Harmonium too and under the guidance of the great Harmonium exponent of our times Pt. Rambhau Bijapure, he began playing Harmonium. His riyaz under his supervision brought accuracy and finesse to his rendition. His performances in Harmonium Solo have been appreciated at various cities in Karnataka and Maharashtra. He participated in a competition hosted by the Government of Karnataka titled "Bal-Pratibhe" and bagged the first prize at State Level at a tender age of 14. He was honoured by the Minister for the Dept. of Kannada and Culture Smt. Rani Satish. He received the scholarship from C.C.R.T.

At this juncture he was attracted to Ghazal gayaki and its richness. He listened to the renditions of several Ghazal singers and was mesmerized by their creativity thus feeling inspired to begin exploring new ideas. Soon he shifted to Mumbai and met Ustad Bhure Khan Saheb, a Legendary Harmonium player and his idol since his childhood. In all this he was fascinated by the sound of the Sarangi. He was very impressed by the capabilities of the instrument in expressing emotions. He listened to many Sarangi maestros and decided to learn the instrument with zeal. He requested Padmavibhushan Pt. Ram Narayanji to accept him as his disciple and Panditji readily agreed to do so. He is currently learning the nuances of the Sarangi under his able guidance.

He is a regular accompanying artist in Mumbai now. He has accompanied several renowned classical vocalists and Ghazal singers on Harmonium in India & Abroad. They include Ustad Rashid Khan, Talat Aziz, Anup Jalota, Pt. Jayateerth Mevundi and Ustad Faiyaz Khan to name a few.

He featured in the popular reality show, Indian Idol on Sony TV. He was specially invited to play Harmonium for an episode featuring Qawwali.
