This specially curated program showcased captivating documentaries and short films that tackled pressing environmental and social issues, creating an intimate and creative atmosphere for the audience.
Over the course of the event, we were treated to a lineup of films that delved into themes of ecological preservation, gender dynamics, and cultural resilience. Highlights included “Some Thoughts on the Common Toad,” a compelling cine-collage that beautifully juxtaposed nature with contemporary societal challenges, narrated by the mesmerizing voice of Tilda Swinton. This film not only celebrated the common toad but also urged viewers to reflect on their connection to the natural world.
Another standout was “A Flaming Forest,” which took us deep into the Biligiri Rangaswamy Temple Tiger Reserve, shedding light on the Soliga adivasis’ intricate relationship with their forest home. This powerful documentary illuminated the impacts of exclusionary conservation policies and highlighted the resilience of the Soligas over decades, prompting meaningful discussions about conservation and community rights.
The following evening featured “Miles Away,” a heartfelt exploration of the lives of brick-makers from Bundelkhand. This film, created by a team of talented women filmmakers, provided intimate insights into the personal struggles and triumphs of female workers in the brick kilns, showcasing their strength and resilience against economic vulnerabilities.
We also had the chance to view “Tomorrow, the Burning Heavens,” which took us back to the eerie celestial phenomena of the 1560s, blending historical anxieties with modern-day reflections on climate change. The film’s compelling visual narrative sparked engaging discussions about our evolving relationship with nature amidst ongoing environmental crises.
