Translated from Manoj Mitra's " Rajdarshan" (Bengali original),  "Chalo, Raja se Milein" is a dark humoured satire where greed, lust, power, class differences, play equal roles accentuated by historical and mythological elements. Belonging to the absurd genre the play operates on several planes ranging from tragedy, comedy to satire, skillfully woven by an array of emotions. It palpably illustrates how " Power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely". On the surface, it appears to be a hilarious roller-coaster of events which when probed, reveal social undertones.

The last king of the Nanda dynasty is on his deathbed. The mischievous god, Shani, is utterly displeased by the king's tyrannous, womanising, drunken nature and is hellbent on punishing him. Lambodar Bhatta, a poor Brahman from a remote village in the kingdom, embarks on a journey to the capital to receive some bit of the wealth the king has decided to donate to this class. As powers conspire to seize the soon-to-be-vacated throne, certain events unfold to change the course of history.

The play, in its lucid, truthful translation, has quite a few characters, intertwined by the magical craft of Manoj Mitra which makes each scene an experience. It's also visually spectacular being dotted with vibrant costumes and props.

Forum-Three, while logging 46 years in theatre, kept nurturing its unique brand, bringing Indian plays in English onto the heavily westernised theatre scene of Bangalore of the 1970's and 80's. This was made possible by vigorous in-house translations of plays that got published by Seagull Books of Kolkata. Not just restricting itself to plays by Indian masters like Arun Mukherjee, Badal Sircar, Manoj Mitra, and Girish Karnad,  the group took up production of plays by Samuel Beckett, Edward Albee, Bertolt Brecht with equal aplomb. Today, embracing the pan-Indian theatre scene, even more, the group has gone on to produce its second Hindi play " Chalo, Raja se Milay", originally written in Bengali by Manoj Mitra. Production of inhouse translation of the same playwright's " Shajano Bagan ", in Kannada is in the offing.

The talent groomed at Forum-Three went on to produce some of the finest names in Indian Theatre, Cinema, and Music - Prakash Raj, Sihikahi Chandru, Srijit Mukherjee, Gulshan Devaiah, to name a few.
