Laya Ki Kahani

Aditi Bhagwat (Kathak and Lavani)

In the context of dance, Laya refers to the pace of rhythm and movement. It is at the foundation of dance, but also at the core of our lives. With time comes movement, growth, change. In that aspect, time or Taal is very integral to art, to life, in general.

Time and tempo in dance are expressed through movement, rhythm and a progression of ideas. Laya and Taal go hand in hand making rhythm the universal language of dance and music across disciplines. In Laya Kī Kahānī we explore Laya and its various manifestations. The artist showcases traditional complex rhythmic compositions and poetry, weaving stories of how ‘Laya’ is integrated in our everyday lives.

Aditi Bhagwat began rigorous training in the Jaipur style of ‘Kathak’ dance under Padmashri Dr.Roshan Kumari and Smt. Nandita Puri with strict discipline and ethics. Having secured a masters in Psychology, Aditi acquired a masters in Kathak dance as well.

With a strong foothold in traditional Kathak dance, Aditi has experimented with the traditions of Jazz, Flamenco and World Music. Aditi received the OneBeat fellowship which was an initiative of the US Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. Under this fellowship Aditi collaborated with various musicians from across the globe.

Kathak is the dance of the storytellers and Aditi uses Kathak as the basis of her presentation in this concept. Dance and Drama, referred to as ‘Nātya’ is a highlight of her performance.
