A Play by Nadira Babbar - originally in Hindi and translated to Kannada by DS Chougale. Performed by Nudi Sudarshan and directed by Hulugappa Kattimani
About the play:
Sakubai, the protagonist, was born in a remote village of Maharashtra. At the tender age of seven, extreme poverty forces her move to Mumbai. Her dream of attending school and coming up in life gets shattered as she had to work as a domestic help along with her mother, Lakshmi Bai Jamde, at various households to eke out a living.
This hard life, instead of killing her spirit, makes her gain many insights into the unpredictable nature of life, and she learns her life lessons as she roams the streets and comes into contact with multifarious people.Even during a life of hardships, she has always had a soft corner for her parents and siblings. While toiling away her life in the houses of rich people, who often were ignorant of and insensitive to her plight and even treated her like a piece of their household articles, Sakubai has made one thing her life's mission: ensuring that her daughter gets a good education and grows up as a person with rich humane values. Her father supports the family despite being a cripple. Her sister ends her life after ending up in the redlight area of Kamatipura, the culmination of a deceitful marriage. Sakubai's husband, after leading a life of infidelity for long, finally succumbs to AIDS.
At the end of the play, Sakubai emerges as a woman of grit and determination who has never been cowed down by the unjust and debilitating blows of life.
