Unravelling the Dark Side of the Moon
Legendary rock band Pink Floyd’s eighth album, The Dark Side of the Moon, has captivated listeners from the time of its release in 1973 to date. One of the best selling albums in modern popular music, it stayed on the charts for 18 years and inspired countless musicians and listeners alike. This event will revisit this classic and unravel its enduring charm.
We will
- go into a brief history of the band leading up to this album, which will include the evolution in its musical and lyrical direction.
- briefly touch upon what goes into making a concept album and thus acquaint ourselves with what is one of the first and most well known concept albums
- explore each song on the album, unpack the song itself and how it connects to the larger context of the album through the lenses of musicologists, scholars of literature and social thinkers such as Henry David Thoreau.
In this manner, we will reflect on the contemporary social relevance of an album that is a meditation on modern life itself. This will be done without losing sight of the lush musical landscape that enveloped the album and thus added depth and nuance to each song.
