While toiling away her life in the houses of rich people, who often were ignorant of and insensitive to her plight and even treated her like a piece of their household articles, Sakubai has made one thing her life’s mission: ensuring that her daughter gets a good education and grows up as a person with rich humane values.
Her father supports the family despite being a cripple. Her sister ends her life after ending up in the redlight area of Kamatipura, the culmination of a deceitful marriage. Sakubai’s husband, after leading a life of infidelity for long, finally succumbs to AIDS.
